“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Final instructions are often given by loved ones who are sick & dying to those who are alive. We heed these instructions as very important. Our Lord before He ascended into Heaven gave us Final Instructions - not as one dying but as one who has conquered Death and the grave to us who have inherited the promise of Eternal Life.
All Power is Given to Christ
The first thing we notice is that because Christ has been given All Power by the Father. This is both power and authority to perform a task.
The Authority was Given to Us
Not only was power was given to Him but, Christ in turn grants it to us. We are to Go in His name. Not in our own name, or the name of our church but in the name of Jesus Christ, the Resurrected Saviour of the world.
The Final Instructions of our Lord was to bring His Message of Eternal Redemption to the whole world (Heb 9:12).
The Agenda was Given to Us
Not only are we told Where to Go, but we are told What to Do.
The Lord tells us to Teach All nations the precious gospel so that some would be saved. We are to baptize believers as members of a local New Testament church. We are to organize believers into churches including starting new ones if need be.
There is simply no other Programme and Agenda other than 1. the salvation of the lost and 2. the organization of believers into churches. No one is excluded from this work.
The Doctrines were Given to Us
Once organized, we are to begin organizing the practice of the Christian life by 1. Teaching of Doctrine and 2. Faithful Observance of Doctrine.
To “observe all things” is to faithfully Teach and Practice everything that has been given to us in the Bible, without leaving anything out. This task of teaching (teaching, preaching, mentoring, modelling) is done by within local church to propagate a settled faith (Jude 3) and doctrines.
Without a commitment to Teaching & Application of the Bible, no NT church can exist.
The Assurance was Given to Us
He assures us about Christ’s abiding presence with the believer and in the church - IF we are faithful to His Commandment and to His teachings. Where there’s faithful teaching & observance of God’s Word, there will be faithful NT churches.
We are given a tremendous task - one that the Lord requires commitment from all of us. This is honourable work, this is a high calling. This is the only way for us to “repay” our debt.
