“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.”
The Purpose of the Proverbs
God gave to us an exciting instruction manual, the Bible for us to live by, containing the Wisdom and Instructions of God to show us how to live.Nowhere is this more apparent than in the book of Proverbs which has many thought-provoking and soul-stirring sayings.
Being Skillful in Godly Living
Wisdom in v.2 means “skillful” and has to do with “skill in living”. How many of us live our lives skillfully before God?
Not only do we have to live skillfully, but we have to live with moral discipline (“instruction”).
To do so, requires spiritual understanding, which is the capability to distinguish and choose what is true, good and important vs. the alternatives in life.
Wisdom in v.3 is a different word which has to do with the idea of “wise behaviour”. Universities and schools exalt information, data and knowledge, but God exalts wisdom because it empowers us for wise behaviour.
Everyone has the power to choose, but often we are not skillful in our life’s choices, neither were we able to apply moral discipline to our lives, or our choices do not exhibit spiritual understanding. But when we learn and master these, our choices demonstrate “wise behaviour” (or wisdom) through our lives.
Anyone can Attain those Skills
Anyone can attain wisdom. This is not for the high IQ, but for everyone.
The “simple” or naive, those who are easily impressionable or influenced can be instructed. This is the manual for daily living whether you are a child, teenager or adult.
Contrary to the world’s perception of the Bible, it is a Relevant book. “Knowledge” in v.4 is the “apprehension of reality”, including an experiential knowledge of God. The world’s philosophy denies the knowledge of God and most people live as if God does not exist. Yet the Bible accurately tells us what happens to those who ignore the spiritual realities of the real world by their troubles and pain.
Understanding the real world through God’s eyes gives us Discretion. This is the ability to Formulate and and carry out the right measures. When we are able to see the realities and the way ahead of us in the manner that God sees it, we will be able to avoid the pitfalls and other dangers that lie in our way.
There is a reality outside our window, it is a world where people are not living according to God’s reality and are hurting themselves and have pierced their hearts with sorrows. They need to know God’s reality - Hell exists, Judgment exists, Salvation is available and free!
