About Maranatha Baptist Church

Maranatha Baptist Church is an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church that was founded back in 1983.

Briefly put, that means that we are Independent or Autonomous as a church, not under any hierarchy or denominational structure and that we believe that the Head of the church is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself and that the church is not to be under any authority of man on earth though we are commanded, to obey all civil authorities because they are ordained of God.

Our conviction based on the scriptures is that the local church is the organization that the Lord Jesus Christ has instituted to accomplish all of God's programmes on earth including the work of evangelism, starting churches, discipling, teaching, preaching and edification of the saints.

“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.”

It has been said that “Everything rises and falls on Leadership” and nowhere is this more important than in the Church of the Living God. It is important for Order in the Church. It is important for the Teaching and Building up of all disciples and for Modelling and Mentoring lives.

What We Believe

We have been asked many times concerning the doctrine and beliefs of our Church. Of course the simplest statement of faith that we could make is this: “We believe the whole Bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21.” However, we believe that it would be good to set forth some of the things which are most surely believed among us. The following statements are not made in an effort to establish a new set of articles of faith, but rather to make plain some of the things that we believe.

There are five words that fairly set forth what we believe. Those five words are:
• Baptist
• Fundamental
• Premillennial
• Missionary and
• Independent.

About Pastor Jesse Sng

Pastor Jesse Sng served as te Associate Pastor of MBC from 2003 until 2006 when he was voted in to become the Senior Pastor.

He joined MBC as a member in August 2001 and began teaching the Adult Sunday school before the Lord led him to serve in various other ministries including preaching and teaching among the teens/youth, adults. He has ministered to children, teenagers, young adults and drug addicts and was the founding Director of the Maranatha-Faith Bible Institute teaching ministry which trains church members for service in the local church.

Introduction
I am the eldest son of a family of two children. My sister and I were born into a decent family by Singapore standards and we had what most people would call a ‘normal’ childhood.

I was a student at Anglo-Chinese School and I was exposed to chapel services, hymn singing and stories of Jesus there. My neighbour used to invite me to Sunday School at Bedok Methodist Church when I was 7 years old, I went for a few weeks.

My parents were not Christians then even though they came from Methodist schools. My father consented to buy me a RSV bible when I requested for a bible to read.

“What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.”

First Stirring - June 2000

On the Brink of a Mistake

In the year 2000, my wife, daughter and I were living in California, having being posted there as the senior management of a newly listed Singapore public company. During the time we were there, my wife and I became baptized members of Calvary Baptist Church in Fremont, California. We were baptized by Pastor Phil Walker.

We returned to Singapore from California with my 7 month old daughter Amy in June 2000 to attend a wedding. While I was back, I was invited to join a potential new business venture which had received a commitment of US$1 to US$1.5 million in venture capital funding. I was offered a top executive position, along with an attractive reward structure and a role as a partner in the new startup venture. I returned to the USA with the intention of resigning my current position and returning to Singapore. I was eager to prove my ability as an entrepreneur again as I had become a stock-option millionaire because of the current company’s IPO and my reward package.

The first Sunday that I returned, the Lord convicted me that I was on the verge of a big mistake. It was during the Sunday evening preaching on the life of Jacob that I saw how the Lord graciously moved my wife and I to the USA for the purpose of refining us and it had nothing to do with my career. I realised then that my plan to return to Singapore was for the wrong reason.
